Energy and Food- What Reiki Therapy can tell us about how certain foods can impact our energy and wellbeing
Reiki is a form of alternative therapy that emerged from Japan in the late 1800’s. It is mainly centred around energy levels and how certain foods can have a negative impact on our overall well being. Through the avoidance of particular food types, our bodies have the potential to completely overcome some of the fatigue issues that plague a lot of us. Reiki also incorporates various healing strategies that can assist with energy blockages within the body.
You are what you eat
“You are what you eat” is a phrase I’m sure you’ve heard many times, but it is a key understanding of Reiki. Our bodies are made up of the proteins and minerals found in our food. This food also supplies the energies that our bodies need to function. Choosing the right food for the right kind of positive energy is highly beneficial for optimum energy, health and wellbeing.
Therefore, Reiki teachings encourage the consumption of fresh, natural and wholesome foods and liquids that will nourish your body and mind. It is also essential to know where the food has come from, as to understand that food’s origins.
Foods to Avoid
One of the principle foods to avoid with Reiki is Garlic. It is believed garlic is an energy sapper that should be eliminated from your daily life in order to relax the body and mind. Garlic is said to be an antibiotic that does not actually differentiate between the good and bad bacteria in the body, killing both. Reiki teachings insist that removing garlic from your diet will increase the functioning of your taste buds and your digestive system, as well as having a calming effect on your mind. Other positives is that it will help eliminate bad breath, heartburn, gas, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and body odor.
Many Reiki studies have been carried out in relation to the effects of pungent plants including chives, leeks, garlic, onion, leeks, shallots and spring onions on their effects on mind, body, emotional and energy levels on the human body and spirit. These pungent plants have harmful effects on the “Primeval Breath” of the five organs of the body – the heart, lungs, spleen, kidney and liver and can cause unwholesome reactions such as bad body odor, bad breath and an offensive smell when discharged from bowels. These foods have also been linked to premature aging due to their chemical occidation content.
Reiki also teaches that food has vibrational qualities, with the quality of the energy of food flowing into the body when eaten. The three Gunas are the three types of energy within foods. They are:
Which represents purity,
Which represents passion and,
Which represents inertia.
It is said that one of the three Gunas is more present within each person than the others. When eating, take note of how specific foods make you feel, each person will feel differently, and establish what it is you need out of the food that you eat. In saying this, a proper balance is always essential, not just of vitamins, nutrients and food groups, but of the Gunas.
Sattvic foods are considered the purest foods of all and include cereals, milk, butter, cheese, nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables, seeds and honey. Rajasic foods include hot and spicy foods, root vegetables, fish, salt and stimulants such as tea and coffee. Tamasic foods include meat, garlic, onions, chives, shellfish, chilis, eggs, deep fried foods and fermented foods.
Appreciating your food
Reiki teachings portray that the spirit in which the food is prepared and the energy in which the food is eaten is transported into the food itself. The teachings describe the process of honoring your food when you are preparing it. Consciously bless the food and being grateful for its existence. Honor your food as “life giving life for life” and cherish it for just that, giving you energy and life. Saying a grace or blessing is common practice in many cultures and belief systems. Giving thanks to your food and implying what energies you give to it will benefit your soul and levels of energy.
A good way to remember to give thanks to your food is by saying silently or out loud, “I eat in clarity” or “I eat in love”. This helps to bring your mind to the task at hand and will therefore draw the most energy out of your food. The quality of food we eat is said to have direct influence on our mental and physical wellbeing. And, according the Reiki teachings, have a direct influence on our energy levels.
Jose Calarco, a proponent of Reiki in Australia for over 25 years, has spoken in depth on the practice and has some other tips for those curious:
- Though not critical for Reiki, he believes that a vegan diet is the way in which to achieve spiritual divinity and ascendance. It will also help you be your most happy, energetic and healthy self.
- Eating organic is another way to achieve the highest level of energy from food with organic food containing over 83% more nutrients and no chemical additives.
- Always eat and buy local if possible. The freshness of recently cultivated food is far superior then import anted, week old, nutrient-weak foods.
- Try a ratio of 70/30 of raw food to cooked food.
What if I’m sick?
As discussed, Reiki teachings powerfully deter the consumption of garlic and onion. Many people believe that they help to deter flus and colds, but this may not always be the case. As they are a food that depletes energy and encourages imbalance, they may make the body more vulnerable to illness. And when you have a cold or flu, low energy makes it harder for the body to fight off infection. They also have a negative effect on the mind encouraging dull headaches, nightmares and difficulty in remaining focused.
Reiki teachings tell us a lot about the direct influence of food on our levels of energy. The famous line “you are what you eat” resonates well with its teachings and this can really help with your decision making. Most Reiki teachings deter the consumption of garlic and onions due to the negative effect that these foods have on energy levels. It is also integral to analyse how you react to the consumption of these types of harsh foods. Being aware of your type of Guna can also help you to determine what is best for you in regard to diet and eating. Being aware of this can rapidly liven up energy levels and overall general wellbeing.
There may be some things that you disagree with overall with Reiki teachings, and like anything, our diets and practice of eating should be as much about the individual and what works for them. However, if you are experiencing issues with energy levels, then there are certainly lessons that you can try with Reiki.
